What they say:
This delicious wine has enjoyed 6 months in American Oak barrels in the cellars of Berberana, the well known Rioja producer. Showing a bouquet of rich, intense red fruits against a background of vanilla oak flavours, this is a well balanced wine with a smooth aftertaste. Ideal with roasts.
My view:
I don't know what was in these "American Oak barrels" before the wine, but I can only recommend they buy some better barrels, from Spain perhaps?! Don't get me wrong, this wine is not awful, far from it, but it just doesn't have that smoothness that some of the Spanish reds do. I can't put my finger on what is wrong with it but at approaching £5 a bottle there are a good few better options out there. Personally I would add an extra pound and take a bottle of Campo Viejo Crianza next time.
