Tesco Simply Tempranillo

As a pensioner I don't have a great deal to spend on luxuries, but on the recommendation of a knowledgeable, helpful lady in your Andover store I tried the above wine. It is superb!!
I do like Rioja, so I also tried the Simply Garnacha and this was almost as good.
Thank you Tesco for your consideration of your "poorer" customers.

Virgin Wine "naked" South Australian Hand Select

Virgin Wine do "naked" bottles that don't have a vineyard label, but just a "plain" label describing the specifics of the wine in the bottle. This is a 2008 Viognier which leads with a honeyed nose and follows up with a smooth citrus burst. At 13.5% ABV it's got quite a punch for a white, but goes down very smoothly.

We had it as a late-afternoon drink with croustinis topped with broad bean and pea mash and it went superbly!

This was part of a mixed case of 6 bottles from Virgin, including three of theses, and worked out about £6.50 per bottle. Top stuff! Overall I'd have to go for 8 out of 10.

More Information

ABOUT THIS WINE: Grown 60km from Zaragoza in an awe inspiring region located in Spain's North East, this Monte Otón Granacha is an exceptional example of modern Spanish winemaking. Grown in vineyards largely given over to Garnacha (or Grenache in France), where it thrives in the dry hot conditions, the vines are hand harvested and taken to the winery in the cool of night to preserve their freshness. After fermenting and storage, it's then bottled young and fresh several months later

SERVING: Serve this wine at room temperature with hearty meat dishes, pasta or pizza. It also makes for a terrific party wine

KEEPING: Although ready to drink now, you can keep this wine for up to one year after purchase. Once started, enjoy it within three days and store the bottle somewhere cool, resealing it between servings.

McGuigan Estate Shiraz (2005)

All I can say is this is a fantastic bargain and I will be going back this afternoon to buy more if they still have some. This is as good (if not better) than the Hardy’s Stamp. It is subtle, smooth and very very moreish. I am certainly going to keep a lookout for this on offer again, and I might even try some of McGuigans more expensive wines (the Limestone Coast one sounds interesting).

It says on the bottle “keeps for up to 2 years”.. yeah, right! It’s not going to keep for 2 weeks in my house!

Heartily recommended

ABOUT THIS WINE: If you're a fan of easy-drinking, ripe-fruited reds but find styles from the New World just a bit too rich, then this is just the wine for you. Winemaker Cedric Jenin describes this as a "typical French Cabernet" and that's exactly what it is, with ripe but fresh cassis fruit and an attractive herbal, peppery quality. What's more, its crisp, dry palate feel leaves you wanting more rather than feeling overwhelmed - and also makes it a great match for food.

SERVING: Try this food friendly Cabernet with lamb chops or pepperoni pizza. Ideal serving temperature 16°C .

KEEPING: This wine is ready to drink now, whilst the fruit is fresh and vibrant and should be consumed within 12 months of the date of purchase for maximum pleasure. Once opened this wine will remain in good condition for 2 days, provided the bottle is resealed between servings and stored in a cool place.
