Case of 12 - £37.69
(£3.14/bottle)

http://mands.at/winesurvey?CTY=37&DURL= ... extid=apba

ABOUT THIS WINE: This fruity, popular white comes from the sunny region of Valencia, on Spain's east coast, and has been made from the typical local Spanish grape varieties Macabeo and Malvasia. The warm sun of Valencia, tempered by cool sea breezes, has led to a well-balanced white, ripe yet tangy and refreshing. The winemaker was Jesus Garcia Alvarez. This wine is unoaked.

SERVING: Serve this wine lightly chilled. Enjoy the lively flavours on its own or try matching it with simple grilled or roast chicken, creamy pasta dishes, paella or risotto.

KEEPING: Open this wine while it is young and vibrant, within 3 months of purchase. Once started, keep the resealed bottle in the fridge and finish in 2 days.

Berberana Dragon Tempranillo 2006

Price: £4.79
Where from: Co-Op

What they say:

This delicious wine has enjoyed 6 months in American Oak barrels in the cellars of Berberana, the well known Rioja producer. Showing a bouquet of rich, intense red fruits against a background of vanilla oak flavours, this is a well balanced wine with a smooth aftertaste. Ideal with roasts.

My view:

I don't know what was in these "American Oak barrels" before the wine, but I can only recommend they buy some better barrels, from Spain perhaps?! Don't get me wrong, this wine is not awful, far from it, but it just doesn't have that smoothness that some of the Spanish reds do. I can't put my finger on what is wrong with it but at approaching £5 a bottle there are a good few better options out there. Personally I would add an extra pound and take a bottle of Campo Viejo Crianza next time.
